Expert Reports One-Third of Long-Term Care Insurance Claims Now Cover Home Care

BALTIMORE, Maryland – March 7, 2007 - Eight million Americans now own long-term care insurance protection obtained on an individual basis or through their employer, according to Ginni Bonarrigo of First Financial Group based in Baltimore, Maryland. And, while most people associate long-term care insurance with nursing homes, a just-published study reveals the majority of benefits actually pay for home care or assisted living.

According to a study conducted by the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, individuals received over $3.3 billion in benefit payments during 2006 - the highest annual payout. The Association's data revealed that about one-third (33.91%) of the long-term care insurance benefit payments were allocated for home care. The industry group's study discovered that almost 30 percent (29.63%) of benefits paid went toward assisted living costs and the balance, 36.46 percent, were allocated for nursing home care.

"One of the most significant benefits of owning long-term care coverage is the fact that it can pay for care received in your own home, which is what people clearly prefer," Bonarrigo, a member of the professional trade group explains. According to the Association, the largest single claim paid to date by an insurer has exceeded $875,000. "Some of these individuals are still receiving long-term care so the total value of the protection they've received will continue to grow”,  Bonarrigo notes.
